Case Study: XS News Strengthens Storage Stability and Simplifies Operations with OSNexus QuantaStor

The Challenge

XS News was operating a proprietary ZFS-based storage environment that, while effective, became increasingly complex to manage as it scaled. Their IT team needed to pivot to a platform that would improve performance by integrating NVMe acceleration while keeping the solution cost-efficient. The requirements included support for virtual machine workloads and general file storage while maintaining strong data integrity and redundancy. Overall, XS News needed a solution that could simplify operations, improve reliability, and deliver stronger high-availability capabilities – without sacrificing the benefits of ZFS.

“QuantaStor provided a way to build a ZFS-based storage platform with NVMe acceleration, improved HA capabilities, and easier centralized management compared to maintaining our previous proprietary implementation,” remarked the XS News IT team.

The Solution

After evaluating distributed storage platforms and proprietary appliances, XS News selected QuantaStor for its ability to combine ZFS with enterprise-grade features in a flexible, easy-to-manage platform.
QuantaStor provided:

  • ZFS-based architecture with enhanced enterprise capabilities

  • Integrated high availability, simplifying failover and cluster operations

  • Centralized management, reducing administrative overhead

  • NVMe acceleration support to improve performance

  • Hardware flexibility, enabling deployment on standard, vendor-selected systems

  • Cost efficiency, avoiding proprietary hardware lock-in

The Result

XS News has 2x Supermicro systems connected to a Supermicro JBOD configured as a scale-up deployment. It’s a hybrid configuration using HDDs in RAID10 with a special vdev and SLOG mirror. With QuantaStor in place, XS News achieved a more stable, efficient, and scalable storage environment. By modernizing its storage infrastructure with QuantaStor, XS News successfully balanced performance, reliability, and operational simplicity—creating a platform that supports current needs while scaling for future growth.

“QuantaStor improved the stability of our storage environment while simplifying day-to-day operations for our

infrastructure team,” said the XS News IT team.
