High-Performance All-Flash SAN/NAS Appliance

All-flash QuantaStor configurations provide up to 58TB of raw storage per appliance using enterprise SATA SSD devices.
All-flash configurations are ideal for demanding applications requiring high-performance (both read & write IOPS and throughput).

Highly-available QuantaStor SAN/NAS appliance configurations take the capabilities of the standard single appliance All-Flash QuantaStor system and extend it to deliver highly-available storage which is resilient to rack and server outages.  QuantaStor HA configurations use a shared storage back-end which may be SAS, FC, or iSCSI based.   Using the high-performance 10GbE based networking infrastructure of the IBM Bluemix datacenters, QuantaStor HA All-Flash configurations at IBM Blumix use iSCSI based shared storage in a two tiered architecture which is managed within a single storage grid.

 

Front-end appliances deliver highly available SAN/NAS storage and Require a minimum of two back-end storage nodes.  Each back-end storage node can contain up to 30 data drives.  Data drives should be added in increments of 5x HDDs or SSDs at a time.   Configurations can be expanded at any time by adding additional back-end storage nodes.

Hybrid SAN/NAS Appliance

IBM Cloud's QuantaStor SDS High-Capacity Hybrid SAN/NAS Appliance configurations provide up to 256TB of raw storage per appliance. Appliances combine to form a storage grid which can scale to 64x appliances or 16PB of storage in the IBM Cloud.  Hybrid appliances combine HDDs with high write endurance SSDs to accelerate write performance for small block I/O which is important for databases and virtualization workloads.

QuantaStor Scale-out Object storage configurations scale from 3x to 64x appliances and up to 16PB of storage per grid in the IBM Cloud.  With support for both the S3 and SWIFT protocols QuantaStor SDS object storage deployments can be used to a broad spectrum of next-gen applications, long term archive, and content delivery applications. The example configuration below illustrates a 5x appliance QuantaStor SDS object storage configuration with 240TB of raw storage per appliance and 1200TB of storage in the grid.  QuantaStor uses hardware RAID for fault-tolerance and combines this with erasure-coding or replicas across appliances to ensure high-availability and fault-tolerance.  Scale-out Object storage configurations are elastic and can be expanded with zero downtime by adding additional appliances to the grid.

Performance
Throughput performance is roughly ~400-600MB/sec for a 5x node appliance configuration using replica based data protection. Performance of ~200MB/sec is common for erasure-coding configurations.
